Forsters Tern

One in the Crowd

  One in the Crowd

The Snow Goose, Chen caerulescens, nests on the Arctic tundra in Northern part of Canada. It spends winters in fields and marshes from the mid-Atlantic coast of the US south to Mexico and near the San Francisco Bay, the Gulf of California and the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. In late February and early March each year, thousands gather at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area in Pennsylvania preparing for the long flight to their nesting grounds. At the time I took this picture, an estimated 115,000 were present. At times of danger, like an eagle passing overhead, the entire flock will rise up in unison creating the white cloud seen in this photograph. In this image one lone Blue Goose is headed in the opposite direction from the others.
